many thanks, I have added them in all their natural glory.

  2. admin says:

Lovely, they don’t come entirely stark naked though, having Ubuntu pre-installed (which is no bad thing). I really like the Tux keyboard and even the laptops are delightfully free from keycaps that advertise proprietary operating systems. They get an honourable mention, and I might drop them an email to see if they would consider adding a naked option to their operating system list.

  3. Alan Bell says:

Thanks Mauve, adding them now . . .

  4. rb says:

I’ve used Transtec (http://www.transtec.co.uk) for desktops and servers with either no OS or Linux. They also sell notebooks with SuSE Enterprise Desktop pre-loaded or, indeed, the option of no OS.

Transtec’s service is generally first rate!

Unfortunately they’re not a retailer and will normally only sell to business customers.

  5. Alan Bell says:

Selling to business customers is fine, as long as the minimum order quantity is a single computer then they are not a wholesaler and I will include them.

  6. Felis silvestris says:

http://www.multicom.no/ – a consumer web shop in Norway, they do sell a few naked laptops – e.g. Xishan and Compal.

In Norwegian laanguage only, but you can see a Compal configuration page here:
    http://www.multicom.no/SystemConfigurator.aspx?q=st:10568021;c:100561;fl:0

  7. Alan Bell says:

excellent, thanks I will put them in

  8. Matthew Woodcraft says:

    World of Computers

  9. ausage says:

You should add a category for Canada

  10. Allen says:

    http://www.krex.com

They sell some low-end machines without an OS. I have not checked on whether their better systems are available without an OS, as I usually build my own. But I do know others that have bought from them.

  11. Alan Bell says:

The categories turn up as I put pages in them. As soon as someone nominates a store in Canada I will add the category

  12. Carlie J. Coats, Jr. says:

Add: “PCs for Everyone” of Cambridge MA USA.
    (http://www.pcsforeveryone.com/) — the
default “customize” pages allow “no OS” as an option.

That’s where I bought my current home computer (Intel P35DP motherboard, E8400 processor, ATI 3870 graphics, etc), on which I’m running Mandriva 2009.0. I’ve been very happy with them so far. [I'm in NC USA myself...]

  13. Alan Bell says:

    I added Krex

  14. Alan Bell says:

World of computers now have a page

  15. Alan Bell says:

@ Ausage, I see now why you wanted the Canada category, thanks for creating the entry, I wasn’t sure if contributor access did what I wanted but it looks like it worked perfectly. I added Canada now.

  16. Neal Somos says:

    http://www.ascendtech.us/items.asp?Cc=DT&Bc=&mainCC=DT

You will find a link for “Amd Complete Computers No Os”
and also “Intel Complete Computers No Os”

They happen to be in greater Cleveland in the USA.

  17. Alan Bell says:

I have now added them, thanks.

  18. lord_alan says:

    Hi,

Just came across these guys. http://www.very-pc.co.uk They have a “none” option as well as Ubuntu and some proprietary operating systems.

    Nice and green machines too!

  19. Alan Bell says:

they have been very added to the list.

  20. John says:

In the US you can go to http://www.geeks.com and they have a number of computers that have no OS on them and some even have Ubuntu on them. I am not a fan of Ubuntu but they do have a number that have no OS so you are just paying for the hardware.

  21. Tom Wroblewski says:

I’ve bought barebone systems for years from:

    http://www.tigerdirect.com/

barebone systems come disassembled but the prices are reasonable and it’s worth it not to pay the micro$oft tax.

  22. cmspider says:

    Varsity computers, Vancouver, Canada

    http://www.varsity.ca

  23. Alan Bell says:

I added a barebones category for them. I couldn’t find a naked laptop or complete desktop, but some of the servers are starkers.

  24. Alan Bell says:

    Varsity are now in.

  25. Steven says:

    don’t forget about Xxodd

    http://www.xxodd.nl

it’s also a good dutch company

  26. Alan Bell says:

excellent, I like “Geen Operating System”

  27. rafo says:

http://www.dataparadiset.com is a Swedish E-shop where you can get naked computers. For example one like this at 2995 SEK: Platina Value LE-1640 @ 2.6Ghz (nForce 630, GeForce 7025, 2GB DDR2 800Mhz, 80GB HDD SATAII, 16xDVD-ROM SATA, GBLAN, USB 2.0, 400W).

Mail addresses: sales@dataparadiset.com, support@dataparadiset.com. The webpages are in Swwedish only.

An independent rating service (cint.se) seems to give them a good ranking and the customer stories are overall happy.

  28. Alan Bell says:

thanks, they are now in. Ingen ändring FTW

  29. Ian says:

http://www.cyberpowersystem.co.uk/ allow you to buy the PC with Windows, or a blank HD.

http://www.efficientpc.co.uk/ is aimed at Linux users, buat let you choose to not have an OS installed too.

  30. Alan Bell says:

I added Cyber Power, Efficient PC are already listed.

  31. Pastychomper says:

Cram Computers (www.cramcomputers.co.uk) is a high-street shop in Scunthorpe, UK. A while ago I bought one from their range of “bare bones” (naked, complete base unit) PCs, which was well-built and cheap. The site now only advertises systems either built to order or with a proprietary OS, but the sister site, http://www.cc24.co.uk, offers bare-bones systems.

  32. wei chong says:

Sorry if this does not apply but it would be great if South East Asia, especially Malaysia vendor that sells naked PC would also get included, as consumer like myself as well as my peers would be interested…

  33. Alan Bell says:

South East Asia absolutely applies, just like anywhere else. Tell me about a store and I will add it.

  34. Gene says:

Full disclosure: I own this business.

    ERA Computers & Consulting’s “ERACC On-Line Shopping”

    http://shopping.eracc.com/content/preloaded-personal-or-server-computer-quote

While it says “preloaded” we also offer “bare bones” and “bare drive’ systems.

  35. Gene says:

Oops, forgot to say ERA Computers & Consulting is in the USA.

  36. Alan Bell says:

Excellent, thanks Gene, you are on the list.

  37. Eruaran says:

    Hi,

At Infinity Computer Group we build whatever PC you ask for. We will install any operating system you ask for, or no operating system. We also do nice things with notebooks. ;)

  38. Alan Bell says:

I have added you to the list, but you do need a bit more nakedness on your website :-)

  39. Patrick Chapman says:

A Canadian Company that build a naked computer to my specs (within the component list they had), assembled and shipped it to me. They included all cabling and software

they can be found on the web at:
    http://ncix.com/

    design your own computer at:
    http://pc.ncix.com/pcbuilder/

I am not associated with them in any way. Just a happy customer.

  40. Alan Bell says:

    in they go . . .

  41. Thaddeus says:

    http://www.ibexpc.com/index.html
    and
    http://www.mwave.com
For the last six years I’ve been running a machine bought from mwave.com. Once had a bad stick of RAM and they replaced it quickly.

  42. Wayne says:

A list of stores is nice, what would be nicer is to list them by category (laptop, desktop, netbook, etc), and also for those who do install Operating Systems, which ones they use.

  43. Wayne says:

Oh, and country would be useful as well!

  44. Roger Duncan says:

Tech Advanced Computers Pensacola and Fort Walton stores sells bare bones computers and components. Great selection. When I was there didn’t include Linux with computers.

  45. Alan Bell says:

@wayne look down the screen a bit, below the hall of fame is a list of categories with countries and computer type. There is a category for those who offer Linux pre-installed but I didn’t break this out by distro. I am having enough fun keeping up with the store suggestions at the moment.

  46. Alan Bell says:

not really seeing enough nakedness at mwave. There are barebones systems, but these are not complete kits with everything.

  47. Alan Bell says:

OK, not much evidence of nakedness on the tech advanced website, but they will do a custom build. I think I might have to be a bit strict here, we need more evidence of nakedness as a published option in a complete system. We need more explicit nakedness. Give them a shout and tell them how much you liked your bare computer and ask them if they would consider updating their website to better indicate that they are willing to sell whole computers naked.
