eRacks

Sunday, June 28th, 2009

eRacks specialise in Open Source systems most having an option of No OS (tested with Ubuntu) which is fantastic. I also saw an interesting standard feature of a $5 donation to an Open Source project which is a great idea. They have a good selection of naked servers, desktops, laptops and netbooks, all with a Linux or BSD available and the servers and desktops available starkers.

fit-PC2

Thursday, June 25th, 2009

fit-PC2 is a small low power fanless computer based on the Intel Atom processor. It might make a good MythTV front end. There are three naked configurations available, an Ubuntu option and some proprietary OS that you don’t want.

Tiger Direct

Thursday, May 14th, 2009

Tiger Direct have a range of laptops, desktops and servers, and for us they have a good selection of barebones kits. These are complete computers that just need assembly with nothing more complicated than a screwdriver. Some of their servers are shipped naked too.

Wednesday, May 13th, 2009

Emperor Linux supply a wide range of laptops including military grade rugged laptops. All come with Linux pre-installed and a custom kernel to ensure all the hardware is fully supported. They will pre-install a range of distros, but sadly no nakedness at the moment.

System 76

Wednesday, May 13th, 2009

System 76 is a strong supplier of Ubuntu with a good range of desktops and laptops with the latest release of Ubuntu pre-installed. This would appear to be non-removeable, however the servers do come in the buff.

Ascendtech

Wednesday, May 13th, 2009

Ascendtech have a good range of desktop computers available with no operating system. They are also selling recertified (second hand/ex demo/store stock/returns etc.) laptops many with no operating system, but they don’t get a listing in the laptops category as only brand new computers qualify. The servers are nice and naked though.

PCs For Everyone

Tuesday, May 12th, 2009

PCs For Everyone because everyone needs a naked PC! This friendly retail online store includes a proprietary operating system in the default configuration of their desktops and laptops but it is removable. Servers come naked by default. They lose a few points by having this:

as the icon that displays when you select the naked option. It strikes me that this:

would look much better. PCs For Everyone, if you want to use the logo then I am totally cool with that.

Krex Computers

Tuesday, May 12th, 2009

Krex Computers sell components and full systems, many come with an undesirable operating system however (at the time of writing) the deal of the week on the front page is a full frontal naked PC with “a variety of operating systems as an optional extra”
