About

If you want to use a Free and Open Source operating system on a computer then it is rather objectionable to be forced to purchase a proprietary operating system bundled with the hardware you want. This site lists and promotes computer shops both online and in the real world that will sell a pure, unadulterated, stark naked computer, fresh as the day it was born waiting for you to install the operating system of your choice.

Feel free to browse the categories on the right and comment on any of the stores to tell everyone about your experiences with them. If there is a store we are missing then please let us know by leaving a comment or registering on the site and writing up your own article about a store.

This site does appear to be attracting a bit of attention right now, which is great. If you have a blog or other outlet why not say what you think about the relative scarcity of Naked Computers in the marketplace.

Whilst nakedcomputers.org is all about the positive benefits of going natural there are some shocking examples of enforced dress codes which we will be exhibiting in a hall of shame. Our first entry to this category is the below image from a recently purchased Toshiba:

Anti-Competitive Seal

The text reads as follows:

Quality Seal
Importants Notice: TOSHIBA Corporation (TOSHIBA) and/or its subsidiaries currently sell personal computers with pre-installed Microsoft operating system as computing solution. Please note, notwithstanding anything to the contrary in the documentation accompanying your computer, TOSHIBA and/or its subsidiaries do not accept the return of component parts or bundled software, which have been removed from the PC System. Pro-rata refunds on individual components or bundled software, including the operating system, will not be granted.

If you have seen further examples of this kind of behaviour (with photographic evidence) please get in touch.
